Let The Games Begin!

Apple’s grip on the mobile gaming market tightens with the iPhone’s Game Center app in the iOS 4.1 update.

Game Center basically provides the infrastructure for Apple’s iOS games to offer multi-player and leaderboard sharing options. Like iTunes' new Ping, Game Center has a social networking aspect to it - letting you add friends and see their status as well as which games they’ve been playing and their high scores. Unfortunately sometimes it lets you get a little too social, as I’ll touch on in a minute.

Don’t get too excited about Game Center if you’re still using an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G or the first-gen iPod touch - you’ve been left out in the cold as Apple tried to encourage people to upgrade.

When you first launch Game Center you need to login with your iTunes account details and then create a profile, which is basically just choosing your location and a username (it’s another land rush, so get in early if you want a common name). You can also nominate extra email addresses which people can use to find you as a friend, which is handy if your iTunes account doesn’t use your primary email address.

There are a few ways to add people to your friend list. Firstly you can click on the Requests tab and then enter someone’s email address, which will attempt to auto-complete using your phone’s address book. When you’ve sent the invitation, your friend receives an email with a link to the Apple website telling them how to create a Game Center account and accept your invitation.

If your friend has already created an account, you can send them an invite using their Game Center username. If their iPhone is logged into Game Center, they’ll get a pop-up message with a bloody loud trumpet fanfare asking if they want to be your friend. Game Center stays logged in, in the background, so perhaps try not to invite your friends in the middle of the night. You’ll get a pop-up to confirm they’ve accepted, then you can see them in your friend list.

What’s strange is that changing the defaults under Settings/Notifications/Game Center makes no difference. I sat down with two iPhone 4s and switched off all Game Center notifications on one, but there were still pop-ups and trumpets when that phone was invited to join a game or received a friend request from the other phone. This is going to be a major hassle if spammers start to target the service. Unless you’re a keen social gamer, I’d recommend logging out when you’re not using Game Center.

When you’re first setting up Game Center you’ve the option to disable “Find Me By Email”, which you would think means friends will only be able to find you if they know your Game Center username. This doesn’t seem to be the case. I had a friend disable “Find Me By Email” and I could still email him an invite, or else use his Game Center username. The setting, and the fact you can add extra email addresses, implies there is some way to search for users - as you might with Skype or Facebook - but I can't find such an option.

What’s really weird is that I had someone show up in my Friend list that I’m pretty sure I didn’t invite or accept. His username was Adam but it's clearly not me, so perhaps I invited him by mistake or perhaps Game Center got its wires crossed - I’m not sure. I sent him a message by removing him as a friend and then reinviting him and changing the default text, but he hasn’t replied. Once someone accepts you as a friend you can’t keep sending them messages unless you unfriend them again, but I don't want to hassle the poor guy too much.

Once you’ve found a friend, wanted or otherwise, you can see which Game Center-compatible apps they have installed and click on them to buy them from the app store (I can hear Steve Jobs’ evil villain laugh from here as he racks up another sale). You can also tap Find Game Center Games in the Games tab, which will take you to a list in the iTunes store.

New Rumors Surface About Next Wave of Apples iPad, iPhone and iPods!

Don't believe the hype, but rumors are some new releases coming by the end of this year and early 2011 for the iPad, iPhone and iPod. A smaller screen iPad, the iPhone 5(already?) which might just be a re-packaged iPhone 4 without the antenna issue and 3 new iPods.

Also, a smaller, 7-inch screened version of the iPad is reportedly ready and due for release either later this year or in early 2011.

Apparently Apple has been prototyping devices with 7″ screens since even before the first iPhone. Why they’ve then decided to release the 9.7″ version of the iPad first is not known.

As is always the case with Apple-related rumors, please take this with a substantial pinch of salt. Clearly, as time goes by, more and more rumors regarding future Apple mobile products will emerge, and most may turn out not to be true.

In this specific case, I would say that the smaller iPad seems plausible enough, while pushing the iPhone release date that far back, for the first time since Apple got into the smartphone business, seems less likely. Not impossible though, as Apple have clearly felt more heat for the antenna problems of the iPhone 4 than they were expecting.

This doesn’t seem to have impacted sales in a big way yet, but perhaps it may do so in the future.

In any case, we’ll keep you informed.

Apple's Mac Mini 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (MC239LL/A) Memory is new in the line of memory's. To recap, Apple updated the CPU, default RAM, and hard-drive capacities of both its 9 and 9 Mac Minis. The Core 2 Duo chip in the 9 Mac goes from 2.0GHz to 2.26GHz, the RAM doubles from 1GB of RAM to 2GB, and the hard drive jumps from a 120GB to a 160GB model. The 9 Mac gets a bigger performance boost with its Core 2 Duo chip going from 2.0GHz to 2.53GHz. Its RAM also doubles from 2GB to 4GB, but its hard drive stays the same size.

If you review Macs then you will came to know that you live in a world where computers are tools, where you can be operating system agnostic, and where you appreciate, but stop short of fetish zing, good design. These assumptions are based purely on its specs where you might be having concerns with the price of both new Mac Minis next to competing small scale Windows-based PCs.

Gateway’s SX2800-01 gives the new Minis Mac some stiff competition. A quite good judgment is needed which will help us to test the new Mac Minis, but our hunch is that Gateway’s 9, Core 2 Quad-based SX2800-01 slim tower would outperform or come close enough to either new Mac in processing typical workloads. The benefits of the smaller Mini Mac case may also have a hard time competing with the Gateway’s versatility that comes from an HDMI output and its upgrade options. There is an expectation of more competitive small PCs to come out over the next few weeks as the holiday buying season continues.

Even if the standard Minis Mac do compete well on recital, the server iteration of the Mac is more interesting, and we credit apple memory for listening to a specialized portion of the Mac current user base. For 9, Apple will now sell you a Mini Mac that basically mirrors the new 9 model, apart from that instead of OS X you get OS X Server, and the DVD burner that has been replaced by a second hard drive, for 1TB of storage overall. The price might be more than the DIY crowd will tolerate, but any small workgroup environment that might benefit from an out-of-the-way traffic cop it can plug in and forget could very likely be interested in what the Mac Mini Server has to offer.

Since the announcement of the release of the new iPhone from Apple news and media have been swarming over the subject. There are many nay sayers in this particular topic, but if you look into what the iPhone offers I think you’ll agree this phone is very impressive.

The iPhone for starters doubles as an iPod with 4GB of memory packed into this little metalic beast of a cell phone. What this means to you is an easy integrated PC/Mac interface for uploading MP3 and iTune visual media. Visual media being TV shows and movies.

For those shows and movies, the iPhone has an impressive wide-screen for viewing. The only con I can think of in regards to the viewing of media is the fact that the type pad as well as application launching is also the screen. French fry fans be cautioned.

The iPhone is web capable and is equipped with the latest in mobile web browsing technology. The phone uses the application Safari for it’s HTML viewing and is capable of doing close up zoom shots in seconds of any web page you may be interested in.

The most impressive feature of this phone I think is the voice mail feature. You can view voice mails in the form of visual contacts and simply tap the voice mail from the contact you actually want to hear instead of listening through a whole random track of voice mails. Apple was really thinking of time savings when they thought up that one.

The iphone allows you to take pictures which is nothing too new just as much as internet access probably isn’t. What is new is that wi-fi connection can be switched from b to g mode. G mode is obviously going to put more Internet applications into a gear we’ve yet to see.

The keypad feature that is actually in the screen as touch mode has a new feature that auto corrects spelling errors. Common with small smart phone pads, errors will be reduced thus saving time again.

In terms of music, you already heard it doubles as an iPod. Making an extra step in the technology for the iPhone however is the ability to browse play lists by album artwork or by title. The technology put into the iPhone enables this to be a fast and speedy process as with all the applications within this new phone.

The iPhone address book allows for seamless phone calls simply by tapping an image, address, or number of who you want to call. They have integrated the same technology for the Google maps so you can imagine how simplistic finding and calling places will be. Goodbye 411!

Those changes are welcome, and we’re also impressed by the Mac Mini’s power efficiency, as well as its ability to handle multiple programs at once. We still take issue with the Mac Mini’s overall value. The Mac Mini remains a distinctive-looking computer and it has more than a few useful features. We can easily imagine it in a light-duty work role. But if your goal for a lower-cost desktop is core hardware bang for the buck, you’re better off with a more well-rounded Windows system. In terms of design, there’s not much here for fans of the previous Minis to get excited about. The case is made of the same aluminum housing and white plastic top, and the only minor differences in the rear panel are an additional USB port (bumping the total up to five), a single FireWire 800 port, a Mini DVI input, and Mini DisplayPort input. The once believed rejected to have it's first chance at the iphone, Verizon is now claiming to be in discussion in Apple for it's very own iPhone coming in 2010!

The latest Apple News points to it's source, USA Today explains that Verizon reported entered serious talks Apple. The newspaper infers that the phone are able to have to be CDMA version, so that it's compatible with Verizon's existent networks. Such action would contradicts Apple COO Tim Cook's own dismissal of CDMA go on week: When discussed about the iPhone making excessively justified the absence of CDMA model by declaring that a single, GSM phone model to produce than a CDMA model. Cook as well criticized CDMA by asserting it has no future, as most CDMA carries plan to phase out the technology in favor of the same 4G standard what will be used on GSM network.

More likely is a direct leap to a 4G. Verizon chief executive Ivan Seiderberng recently explained that a deal might be in the operates as 4G rolls out in 2010, and therefore experience at lest certain of it's network ready for an iPhone CMDA version by then.

I think these are the 5 best features that I can find on the new iPad. I had questions that needed to be answered like portability, battery life, bluetooth, connections and the display. I was very impressed with the results.

The iPad is compact and trim:

A big key for me was the size and weight. I hate lugging around my laptop when I want to just sit on the couch and surf the net while I’m watching TV or just lounging around. With a screen size just under 10 inches it’s just a bit smaller than a netbook. Weighing in at just 1.5 pounds and a minuscule 0.5 inches thick it’s no problem taking it anywhere. I must say I’m really blown away by the overall design. It’s a very slick device and ergonomically sound.

The iPad is fast:

Powered by an Apple A4 processor, it has the best performance versus all the other touch-based gadgets. I must say it’s a breeze running videos, text apps or surfing the web.

How long does the iPad battery last and what about the hard drive?

They claim the iPad will get you 10 hours of battery life. Yes and no. With regular use, like surfing the web here and there and a bit of video now and then you can definitely get 10 hours, sometimes more. But if you run it hard every time you use it then you can expect to get a little less.

Hook the iPad up to your stuff:

The iPad is flawless at transmitting data. No lag time on a fast wifi connection. Even when I’ve traveled a couple of times with it I’ve never had a bad connection no matter where I was at. It features Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, which I found out to be Extended Data Rate, has a great transfer speed. From headphones, mobile phones even an Apple wireless keyboard for those of you who like to write, like me.

The iPad likes to be touched!

The Multi-Touch screen on the iPad is a new feature based on the old iPhone but this completely new with obviously a bigger screen that displays images, videos and web content with very good resolution.

Some users of the machines, however, do wonder if they will have the capability for doing an Apple Mac Mini memory upgrade should that ever become necessary. Unlike other Mac models, for an owner to do an Apple Mac Mini memory increase, it will be a bit different than simply sliding cards into available slots. This is because the system does not offer even a single expansion slot, instead, the machines are optimized to "support" expansions of up to four times the original memory installed.

The way the current owner can do an Apple Mac Mini RAM upgrade is quite simple – they would just purchase the appropriate kit for their machine and do the straightforward installation.

A single illustration can better explain the process: the owner of a Mac Mini may have a machine with 1GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, and a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. This person would need to investigate their options for the maximum amount of memory available in an upgrade. This is something that anyone performing an Apple Mac Mini memory upgrade should demand, because technology has advanced to the level that any computer device or kit maker should be able to easily provide their customers with guarantees and unlimited warrantees.

Since the masses have increased the pressure by intensifying the criticism of the Apple iPhone 4g's antenna problem, Apple has finally come to a somewhat viable solution or compromise if you ask them.

They should have just recalled the phones but, that would have cost the company around $1.4 Billion. A very unlikely scenario indeed. The iPhone 4g has a terrible antenna reception problem when it is held in a specific way. We call it the "Death Grip". Apple says it's a software issue but, won't confirm nor deny that this could disrupt calls or data usage. Imagine if you already got poor reception or there barely any signal strength to begin with.

And the nerve of Steve Jobs telling people it's just a fact of life. Apple may have loyal fans but, no self-respecting human being is taking that one lying down. "Well hold differently", was another ill thought out comment mad by the Apple team. They did finally come up with an answer though that would fix the problem without a massive recall. Buy a case.

That's right folks just buy a case and all your antenna problems will be solved. Not true you say. Au contraire. The internet has been flooded with do it yourself fixes like the now infamous "band-aid" patch. Even Consumer Reports confirms that just adding a case will prevent the signal loss,
